Markarian's Chain is a stretch of galaxies that forms part of the Virgo cluster. When viewed from earth they form a smoothly arced line. Charles Messier discovered the two largest galaxies, M 84 and M 86 in 1781. The other galaxies in the chain were discovered by William Herschel.
