Sea Lion on a beach

Sea Lion on a beach

A sea lion lifts its head backward while resting on a beach of the Galapagos Islands. I learned from our guide that sea lions do this because when they are out of the water and not buoyant, if their heads are forward it closes off their airway slightly and inhibits their breathing so they flop their heads backward like this to fully open up their airway.
