One of the most competitive events at the annual July 4th weekend Leon Iowa rodeo is the rough stock bare back riding event. Riders are required to "mark out" their mount before they leave the gate by exiting the chute with their spurs set above the horse's shoulders and then remain on the horse for at least 8 seconds to score. The riders ability to keep their free hand held high and not touch themselves or the horse is half the riders score. The aggressiveness of the horse is the other half. A perfect score is 100.
